James Hickey

James Hickey, 95, Jamestown, ND, formerly Nortonville, ND died Monday, July 7, 2008 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND.

James Melvin Hickey was born June 23, 1913 at Marshall, MN the son of James William and Sina (Erie) Hickey. He moved with his family to a farm in Mikkelson Township near Nortonville, ND in 1915. James was raised on the farm, attended Mikkelson Township school and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1932. He farmed with his father raising corn, small grains and Hereford cattle. Following his father's retirement in 1948 James farmed with his sister and brother-in-law, Alvin and Pearl Anderson. Alvin and Pearl left the farm in 1960 and James continued on alone. In 1962 he won the Western LaMoure County Conservation Award for planting trees in shelterbelts and rotation of crops. In addition to farming, James also enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising pheasants for release in the fall of the year.

James married Isabelle Holmes Youshefski on December 2, 1972. They continued to live on the farm. He retired from farming in 1985 and they moved to Jamestown, ND in 1989.


Survivors include 2 sisters, Marion Barnick and Pearl Anderson, both Jamestown, ND, and several nieces and nephews including Robert (Mona) Barnick, Kenneth (Shirley) Barnick, Roy Barnick, Dale (Mary) Anderson, Joyce (John) Komar, Janet (Tom) Minogue, Phyllis (Jim) Ingle and Linda (Mark) Stone and 2 stepdaughters, Betty Youshefski, Marysville, WA, and Jean Youshefski, Grand Forks, ND. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and an infant brother.

Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday,July 12, 2008 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND with Reverend Kenrad Pederson officiating.
Visitation: 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday with the family present from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND and for one hour prior to services on Saturday.
Interment: Nortonville, Cemetery, Nortonville, ND
