James R. Jungroth, 85, of Jamestown, ND, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at his home in Jamestown.
James Ralph Jungroth was born September 10, 1925, in Jamestown, the son of Waldemar and Florence (Baenen) Jungroth. He attended public schools in Jamestown and volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. After training, he served at Walterboro, NC as an aircraft mechanic. Following WWII, Jim attended Jamestown College and UND, graduating in Law in 1950. He worked for the Farmers' Union until joining J.A. Cottee and Henry MacKenzie in private practice. Jim served as States Attorney of Stutsman County from 1960 to 1962. He married Dolores Tazarek in Denver, CO in June 1961.
Jim was active in politics and was chairman of the State Democratic-NPL Party. He served in the North Dakota Legislature in 1965. Jim was Past President of the North Dakota Young Democrats and the last chairman of the Non-Partisan League. In 1970, he was chairman of Citizens Committee for Senator Quentin Burdick.
Jim was also an active conservationist. He was on the ND Water Commission and the ND Water Pollution Control Board from 1968 to 1974, and was president of the ND Wildlife Federation from 1973 to 1975. His concern over strip-mining and proposed river diversions for coal interests led him to run for the U.S. Senate on a conservation platform in 1974.
Jim retired from practice but continued following his outdoor interests.
Jim is survived by his son, Eric, Jamestown and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
