Jean Brown

Jean Brown, 89, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Ave Maria Village Nursing Home, Jamestown, ND.

Jean was born to Herbert and Jewell Malkmus in Dayton, Ohio on April 15, 1930. They moved to Cambridge City, Indiana where she grew up and graduated from high school. She moved with her family to Fargo, ND where she was employed by the Dakota National Bank until her marriage to Floyd Brown in 1950. After they married, they spent some time in California with family. When they came back to North Dakota they moved to a farm house near Tappen, ND for two years. In 1954, they purchased a farm near Millarton, ND where they lived and raised their 6 children until November of 1973 when the farm house burned down. After that they bought a house in Montpelier, ND in 1974. During the time on the farm, Jean was a stay at home mom except for a brief term of employment with Singer Sewing Center in Jamestown, ND. In 1973, Jean and Floyd purchased the Stott Grocery Store in Montpelier and remodeled it into the Circle 13 Bar and Lounge and moved the grocery store into the building that used to be the bank. They operated the grocery store there for one year and then sold it. Jean also painted farmstead's with her daughter, Julie Gruenstein, during the summers. Floyd and Jean operated the Circle 13 for 10 1/2 years before they sold it in 1983.

Jean worked as the Clerk/Treasurer for the City of Montpelier for many years after that. Jean enjoyed spending time doing crafts like knitting, crossword puzzles, scrabble and traveling and even learning how to navigate her laptop to use Facebook and play games.

She loved watching the activities that included her grandchildren and greats.

Jean is survived by 6 children. Rebecca (Daryl) Hayes of Spearfish, SD. Galen (Linda) Brown of Rural Jamestown, ND. Terril Kastet (Jerry Spilde) of Rural Ypsilanti, ND. Julie (Larry) Gruenstein of Montpelier, ND. Stephen (Dianne) Brown of Montpelier, ND. Lisa (Michael) Schwartz of Rural Jamestown, ND. One sister, Miriam Tollefson, one brother and sister in-law, Dick & Bea Brown, one sister-in-law, Minnie Malkmus. Along with 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Jewell Malkmus, her husband, Floyd Brown, her brother, Thomas Malkmus, and her brother-in-law, Samuel Tollefson, and 9 of her husband's siblings and their spouses.

Visitation will be 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday, October 28, 2019 at Eddy Funeral Home. Family will be receiving friends one hour before the service on Tuesday at Montpelier Lutheran Church. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 29 at Montpelier Lutheran Church, Montpelier, ND with Pastor Kerry Boese officiating. Interment will be in Brown Family Cemetery, rural Montpelier.
