Jean Carlson, 71, Jamestown, North Dakota passed away December 13, 2003 in Mesa, Arizona, after a short illness of acute myelogenous leukemia. Arella Jean was born May 4, 1932 the first child of Gideon and Louis (Wohl) Lang. She was born on the Lang family farm on which her father was born 23 years earlier. She received her elementary education in rural schools located in Stutsman County. Jean graduated from Sheyenne River Academy at Harvey, ND. After attending Valley City State Teachers College, she taught in rural schools for four years. Jean married Ronald Carlson on November 13, 1953. After farming west of Buchanan for 25 years, they rented out their farm in order to pursue other interests.
Jean was a member of the Jamestown Seventh Day Adventist Church. For many years she helped with Vacation Bible School both as a leader and assistant and brightened the common area at Central Dakota Village with month-appropriate birthday bulletin boards. Jean and Ron traveled worldwide. Some travels took them to Scotland, Norway, Mexico and Africa to help build churches and schools. Since 1989, Jean and Ron's home was always open to friends and relatives be it for a tasty meal or comfy bed. Each year many friends enjoyed a birthday gift of Jean's yummy kuchen. She was a friend's friend, and will be missed by all who loved her dearly.
Jean is survived by her husband; a daughter, Dr. Denise (Rob) Smith, Phoenix, AZ; a son, Lonnie (Marga) Carlson, Bismarck, ND; three grandchildren, Julia, John and Jennie Smith who were a source of great pride and enjoyment, Phoenix, AZ; a brother, Dr. Robert (Wretha) Lang, Punta Gorda, FL; two sisters, Jan Olson, Jamestown and Kathy (Dr. Duane) McKey, Phoenix, AZ; nieces and nephews, Dr. Todd (Lucinda) Lang, Rob (Velvet) Lang, Chris Lang, Mauri (Paul) Mataychek, Bracken (Marcy) McKey and Denae (Mark) Brodis; two sisters-in-law, Carol (Vernon) Seibold and Delaine (Ivan) Morford; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Carlson.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, a brother in infancy and her in-laws, Roy and Lydia Carlson.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Jamestown with Pastor Paul Stuart officiating.
Visitation: 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Eddy Funeral Home.
Prayer Service: 7:30 PM, Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: 9:30 AM, Thursday, Cleveland Cemetery, Cleveland, North Dakota.
