Johannes (Boetie, Rocky) Steenberg

Born June 18, 1965 in Vryheid, Natal, South Africa, the third child of four children born to Lena and Johannes Steenberg. He was fortunate to grow up in the country for most of his childhood. Rocky was a people’s person and would very quickly get to know everyone around. He went to a technical college in South Africa, and worked in the mining field as a mechanical technician for more than 20 years.

His children Lysander born Feb 21, 1998 and Reinhart born Dec 2, 1999 were born in Rustenberg, South Africa. They later moved to Hartenbos in the Cape Province. Rocky started working in the USA as a seasonal farm worker in 2015. He worked for several farmers and ended up here in Jamestown in 2018. He was a very practical person and liked to fix things.

In 2014 he met Nelsa through an online dating site and went to the Philippines to meet her in 2015.  They were married Jan 24 2020 in the Philippines.  Due to covid and all the restrictions, Nelsa could only come and join him in the USA in March of 2022. He loved her dearly and spent many hours with her on the phone during the times that they could not be together.

On Tuesday Sept 6, 2022 he was tragically killed in a freak combine harvester accident on the farm where he worked. Rocky leaves behind his wife Nelsa, his children Lysander and Reinhart, his mother Lena Steenberg and sisters Mariette and Magda, he will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, September 12, 2022 at Cleveland 7th Day Adventist Church, Cleveland, ND with Pastor Peter J.  Simpson officiating.  Interment will be in Gackle 7th Day Adventist Country Cemetery.
