John "Jack" Alan Smith, 72, Jamestown, ND, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at MedCenter One in Bismarck after a long battle with heart disease.
John was born in Jamestown on October 15, 1939 to Ward and Bessie Smith. He was the youngest of 9 children.
He attended Jamestown High School and graduated in 1957. He joined the US Navy right after graduation and continued in the Navy for 20 years, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He traveled all over the world.
He married Marjorie Ellen Wilson of Jamestown January 8, 1961 in Scottsdale IN. The moved frequently throughout their marriage and they had two daughters, Dawn and Bobbi.
After retiring from the Navy in 1977, he returned to Jamestown and began working at Western Gear, currently Goodrich. He worked there until his retirement a few years ago.
Throughout his life, John enjoyed hunting, golfing, traveling, spending time with his family and long drives in the country.
John is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Dawn (Greg) Busche and Bobbi (Matthew) Brugger; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Patrick (Dolly) Smith and two sisters, Sherry (Ken) Faulkner and Darlene White.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
