John Wehler, 92, of Jamestown, North Dakota died in his home on Tuesday, March 18, 2003. John was born on January 11, 1911, the son of Jorgen and Ella Wehler in Grassy Lake, Alberta, Canada.
When he was 18 months old, the family moved to the United States. He was educated in Minnesota and Wisconsin schools. John moved to Jamestown where he met and later married Lillian Lawson on September 21, 1941 in Valley City, North Dakota. He became a naturalized citizen on November 20, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 21, 1942 at Minneapolis. He trained pilots during WW II for the War Training Service at Jamestown College, Jamestown. He was honorably discharged on October 5, 1944 at Omaha, Nebraska. He became employed as a service manager for the Chevrolet garage in Jamestown . John also did crop spraying in the area and was a private corporate pilot for Paul Bjornson. Later, he was a commercial pilot for the White Drug Co.
After retirement, he and Lillian traveled across the United States. He built a lake home at Spiritwood Lake, where they lived for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Jamestown; one son, John (Marilyn) Lawson, Minneapolis, MN; one granddaughter, Anne Dearholt, Baltimore, MD; and one sister, Margaret (Jack) Stroh of Jamesotwn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ed & Adolph; and one sister in infancy.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Friday, March 21, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church, Jamestown with Rev. Dick Boyd officiating.
