Joseph Mathern 88, of Edgeley, ND, died Monday, July 1, 2013 at Manor St. Joseph, Edgeley.
Joseph Mathern was born July 26, 1924, in Strasburg, ND, the son of Ignatius and Julianna (Schmaltz) Mathern. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Joe entered the US Army on May 22, 1946 and served with the 5th Airdrome SQ during WWII. He was discharged on October 4, 1947 as a Corporal. Joe returned to North Dakota and married Amalia "Molly" Krumm on November 25, 1947 in Hague, ND. They farmed and made their home with their 11 children 7 miles north of Edgeley. In addition to farming, Joe worked for the Farmers Union Coop and drove milk truck for Royal Farms Dairy Association and Land O'Lakes. He was on the Mount Calvary Cemetery Board and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Joe had a passion for gardening and woodworking. He was a gentle, kind, and loving man with a great sense of humor, often pulling pranks. He enjoyed music, especially polka, and dancing. Joe enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and Manor family. He was devoted to the Lord and had a very strong faith.
Joe is survived by his children, Herman Mathern, Valley City, ND, Ron (Linda) Mathern, Bismarck, ND, Allen (Susanne) Mathern, Fallon, NV, Mary Vetter, Fargo, ND, Terry (Patricia) Mathern, Fargo, ND, Judy (Jon) Nitschke, Jud, ND, Janice (Tom) Wolf, Bismarck, ND, Karen Duncan, West Fargo, ND, Bonnie (Calvin) Triepke, Edgeley, ND, Greg Mathern, Fargo, ND, and Sue (Jeff) Nuelle, Mandan, ND; 30 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Feist, LaMoure, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Molly in 2009; daughter-in-law, Pam Mathern; brothers, John, Mike, and Blase; and one sister, Helen Brennan.

10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley.
Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2013 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley.
Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2013 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley.
Interment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
