Lawrence "Spitz" Carpenter, 79, Adrian, ND, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Lawrence Herbert "Spitz" Carpenter was born July 23, 1927 on the family farm in Dickey, ND, the son of Herbert and Florence (Holbrook) Carpenter. He was raised and attended school in Dickey, ND and joined the United States Navy in his senior year of high school. He served in the South Pacific in Guam and Kwajalein Marshall Islands in 1946 and 1947, operating the crane for unloading cargo ships and guarding Japanese prisoners. He was awarded the Victory Medal. He received his honorable discharge on November 6, 1947 at the United States Naval Air Station at Alameda, CA. On June 28, 1952, he married Gloria Arthur at Assumption Catholic Church, Dickey, ND. He drove truck for Glen Stemen and worked in Montana on the pipe line. In 1954, they moved to the farm northwest of Adrian, ND. For 8 months in 1955 and 1956, they went to Arizona where he drove truck for J.R. Johnson Trucking hauling cotton seed. They returned to Adrian in 1957. He farmed and drove school bus for the Dickey and Adrian Schools. He raised turkeys for 32 years, was president of the North Dakota Turkey Federation and treasurer for 10 years. He worked at the Adrian Elevator, for Myer and Tennefis Construction, was acting Postmaster at Dickey, worked for 2 years at the North Dakota State Hospital, was president of the Marion High School PTO and had his own Vulture Recycling Business.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; 8 children: Corine (Mark) Kartes, Dickey, ND; Larry (Connie) Carpenter, Sterling, VA; David (Vicki) Carpenter, Moffit, ND; Michelle (Bob) Gunderson, Inver Grove Heights, MN; Susan (Curtis) Scherf, Halstad, MN; Jeffrey (Lisa) Carpenter, Kindred, ND; Melissa (Ray) Godlewski, Gurnee, IL; Jeanette (Charles) Nutter, ,Georgetown, TX; 22 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Alan (Joy) Carpenter, Dickey, ND; Steve (Priscilla) Carpenter, Tifton, GA; a sister, Audrey (Joe) Baumgartner, Dickey, ND and special friends Beverly Larson and Jim Schulte, both Jamestown, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Darrell and Dean.

Prayer Service - 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2007 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND
Visitation - 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2007 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday
