Lawrence “Larry” H. Kropp, 83, of Jamestown, ND peacefully passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.
Larry was born at Trinity Hospital at Jamestown December, 4th, 1935 to Lawrence Paul and Beulah (Campbell) Kropp.
His parents took him home to the family farm near Buchanan, ND, and immediately put him to work. Dad was born to be a farmer. He learned his work ethic, business sense and how to care for the land from his father. Dad and his siblings also developed a strong family bond and belief in God while growing up next to the James River. The family moved to Fried Township in 1953 when the Jamestown Reservoir was constructed that left their farmstead under water.
Dad’s brilliance was evident from an early age and he graduated valedictorian from Buchanan High School in 1953 (class of two). He immediately enlisted in the National Guard and served until 1962. Dad was proud of his grandsons that were enlisted in the National Guard and Navy as this was “following his footsteps”.
It was a balmy, summer night in 1956 when Dad spotted Mom at a dance and knew that life was never going to be the same. His dance moves must have wowed her as they exchanged vows one year later at the first marriage celebration held at Saint Mathias Catholic Church in Windsor, ND, on June 26th. The newlyweds planted their roots on a small farm 1 ½ miles SE of Fried, ND and their union grew into a full life that celebrated 61 anniversaries. He was awarded the Stutsman County young farmer award in 1969. Dad shared his passion of farming with his brother Cliff and was later joined by his oldest son, John.
Dad enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was the biggest cheerleader at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Dad was known for his quick wry wit and dubbed many people with a lasting nickname.
Dad was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Fried 1953-2004, then an active member of Basilica of St. James church, including a Eucharistic minister and communion minister for the home bound for many years. He was also member in the Knights of Columbus, Elk and Eagles club.
Larry is survived by his wife, Darlene, and four children; Lawrence (Nancy Jo) Kropp, Jamestown, Debra (Arnie) Falk, Jamestown, Michael (Teresa) Kropp, Kalispell, MT, and Daniel (Candace) Kropp, Savage, MN, 13 grandchildren; Jennifer Falk, Jeremy Kropp, Brian Kropp, Alison Kropp, Melissa McKey, Nicole Bothman, Jessica DuBord, Kristi Jo Linpinski, Levi Kropp, Quinn Kropp, David Kropp, Abby Kropp & Taylor Kropp, 8 great-grandchildren and two brothers Cliff, Jamestown, ND and Don Kropp Anoka, MN. And brother-in-law, John Dailey and many nieces and nephews.
