Leah Christine (Gums) Fuehrer passed away June 9, 2016 at 98 years old in Jamestown, North Dakota. She was born December 7, 1917 in Napoleon, North Dakota. Her parents were Fred and Katherine (Vossler) Gums. They moved to Jamestown in 1923 where Leah attended grade school and graduated from high school. While attending high school, she worked for the Scott's Five-and-Ten- Cent Store. She continued to work there until 1941. Leah married Albert Fuehrer on August 18, 1940. They lived in Jamestown until 1941 when they moved to Seattle, Washington. Their son Jim was born in Seattle on July 20, 1943. When Al was inducted into the Army in 1943, Leah and Jim returned to Jamestown.
After Al was discharged from the Army, they continued to make their home in Jamestown. Al worked for The Jamestown Motor Supply, which was bought out by TSC. In 1968 Al was transferred to work at TSC in Dickinson, North Dakota until 1974 when they returned to Jamestown and lived there ever since.
Leah worked for Olson Jewelry Store from 1951 to 1956. From 1960 to 1968 she worked for Nodak Mutual Insurance Company as office manager and secretary. While living in Dickinson, she was responsible for opening the Dickinson Nodak Mutual Office and worked there until they returned to Jamestown in 1974. Albert Fuehrer died October 29, 1987. They were married 47 years.
An active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Leah taught Sunday school for 18 years and worked on many other church committees. She loved her church and it always remained an important part of her life. She also volunteered for the Crippled Children's School, PTA, and Boy Scouts of America. Additionally, she was active in the Women's Mission Society, member of Republican Women, and Christian Women's Club.
Leah enjoyed collecting bone china cups, reading, visiting, having coffee with friends, working with flowers, going to college plays and concerts, and trips to New York, Hawaii, national parks, California, Washington, D.C., Peace Garden in Medora and others. She claimed to have no talents, but she had a gift for loving her family and friends and delighted in bringing them together.
She is survived by her son Jim (Debbie) Fuehrer, four grandchildren: Cara (Tim) Prescott, Bryan Fuehrer engaged to Miranda Byse, Justin (Alyssa) Fuehrer, and Jason Fuehrer engaged to Christie Wellik; eight great-grandchildren, and three brothers Ervin (Nora), Reuben and Lloyd (Millie) Gums. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert, her parents, two brothers Fred, Jr. and Harold, two sisters Helen Powers and Edna Weispfenning, and great-great-grandchild Carson James Walth.
Funeral Service; 2:00 pm, Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Visitation; 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday, June 13, at Eddy Funeral Home with a prayer service to follow. Burial Highland Home Cemetery.
