Leah J. Mitchell

Leah J. Mitchell, 86, Jamestown, ND passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017. She was born to Mathilda and Albert Elhard in Jud, ND. Leah graduated from Jamestown High School in 1949. She married Ernest L. Mitchell on June 10, 1950. They had five children together. Ernest worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and Leah was a stay-at-home mother.
After her husband's death, Leah became Clerk of Court for the Jamestown Municipal Court. During retirement, she was employed as curator for the Stutsman County Memorial Museum. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was a longtime member of the Mary Martha Circle group. She enjoyed playing bridge and earned her Life Master Certificate in 1982. Over the years she volunteered for the community, such as, delivering Meals on Wheels, various duties at the Buffalo Visitors Center, PTA, and activities her children were involved in.
Leah was a great fan of her grandchildren and great grandchildren's plays, programs, and sporting events. Besides bridge, she enjoyed reading, sewing, feeding and watching birds, caring for her many flowers, traveling, camping, walking, and entertaining in her home.
She is survived by her five children, Patrice Mitchell, Minot, ND, Barbara (Dan) Bjorum, Valley City, ND, Debra Duncan, Minot, ND, Richard (Kim) Mitchell, Lewistown, ID, and Nancy (Jeffrey) Beck, Minot, ND; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sisters Della Elhard and Wanda Tillman; brothers Morris (Jean) Elhard and Donald Elhard; brother-in-law Marvin (Gayle) Gutknechkt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, her sister Delilah, and her parents Albert and Matilda.
Memorials may be made to the Alfred Dickey Library or the Stutsman County Memorial Museum in Jamestown, ND.

Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 27 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Erik Weber, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery.
