Leon E. Olson, 78, Jamestown, North Dakota died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown with his family at his side under the care of hospice.
Leon was born January 29, 1926 in Streeter, North Dakota, the son of John and Caroline (Rue) Olson. He grew up and attended country school in Streeter. Leon served with distinction under the Army branch of service during WWII and was stationed in Germany. He returned to North Dakota upon his discharge and married Leona Handel on October 10, 1946 in Jamestown. They lived in Jamestown where Leon was employed for Lindberg Builders until his retirement in 1987.
Leon has been an active member of the Jamestown VFW Post 760 for 43 years. He held various offices including; Post Commander for two terms, 22 years as District 7 Poppy Chairman, Clubroom committee member, Military Order of Cooties and VFW Color Guard for 27 years. He was also an active member of Pup Tent 6 and twice as Pup Tent 6 Seam Squirrel Commander.
He enjoyed fishing, selling poppies, building bird houses and spending time with family and friends.
Leon is survived by his wife, Leona of Jamestown; three sons, Dennis (Sandy), Seattle,WA; Alton (Audrey), Gillette, WY and Curtis (Elizabeth), Jamestown; two daughters, Beverly (Robert) Werner, Dallas, TX and Elaine (Andy) Brown, East Grand Forks, MN; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Crystal Lehrke, Hazel Stalock and Lilia Larson; three brothers, Vernon, Orville and Orlin and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown with Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating.
Visitation: 1:00 to 9:00 PM, Monday, May 10, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Home.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Monday, May 10, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, North Dakota.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Jamestown Hospital Hospice program.
