Lyle D. Whitney

Lyle D. Whitney, 68, Jamestown, ND, died at his home on Saturday, April 14, 2012, under hospice care.

Lyle, also known as "Butch", was born June 27, 1943 at Trinity Hospital in Jamestown, the son of Vernon "Bud" and Marjorie (Kramp) Whitney of Ypsilanti, ND. He grew up in Ypsilanti and was baptized and confirmed in the Ypsilanti Lutheran Church. He went to Ypsilanti grade school and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1961. He was an active 4-H member. Butch worked on the family farm until he joined the US Army in August 1964. He was medically discharged in December 1965.

Butch met his wife, Darlene Metzger in January 1966 and they were married July 8, 1966. They lived in Jamestown, Valley City and Edmunds, before moving to Ypsilanti in 1973, where they made their home until moving back to Jamestown in 2004.

He worked for Don Westland from 1966 to 1970, also Denny's Standard, Rollahome, Buffalo Paint & Glass, then Schubert's, where he was a glass glazer until his health failed him.

He was a member of AllVets, lifetime member of DAV and Chicago School for the Blind.

Butch enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, playing cards and shooting pool. As his health declined, limiting his ability to work and enjoy his hobbies, it didn't diminish his sense of humor. He enjoyed talking to his friends and family on the phone everyday. He also enjoyed his collection of eagles.

Butch is survived by his wife, Darlene, Jamestown; two sons, Troy Whitney (special friend, Amanda), Jamestown and Todd Whitney, Richardton, ND; seven grandchildren, Keahrcie and Kylee Reel, Codie, Logan and Gage Whitney, Cheyenne Knecht and Noah Whitney; two great-grandchildren, Kaydin and Elyicia; one brother, Robert (Frieda) Whitney, Ypsilanti; two sisters, Linda (Leroy) Deede, Carrington, ND and Charlene (Duane) Kamphuis, Mandan, ND; brother-in-law, Marvin Kuntz, Jamestown; sister-in-law, Becky Whitney, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marlene; and one brother, Dean.
