Mabel Goehring

Charlotte Mabel Goehring, 87, died October 29, 2012, at Eventide at High Acres in Jamestown, ND.

Charlotte Mabel Orthmeyer was born June 2, 1925, in Hazelton, ND, the daughter of Ben and Charlotte Orthmeyer. She attended school in Hazelton and graduated in 1942. Mabel attended Valley City State and earned her teaching certificate, and then taught school in Emmons County. She taught in the same rural school as her mother had, and taught many of the children of the students her mother had taught.

On October 28, 1948, Mabel married Rueben E. Goehring in Hazelton. They lived in Selby, SD; Kulm, ND; Rolla, ND; and Esmond, ND; where Rueben managed grain elevators for GTA. Mabel cared for their children, Allan and Nancy, and in later years worked as a bookkeeper in the elevator. They later moved to Valley City where they managed a motel. In 1983, they moved to Jamestown where they managed apartments and have made their retirement home. They loved dancing, playing cards, and fishing together, and spending as much time with family as possible. If there was a sporting or musical event for one of the grandchildren, they were there as the biggest fans.

Mabel was a life-long teacher. She was a 4-H leader for over 20 years, a piano instructor, and taught Sunday school and various bible studies. Her 4-H leader duties extended into her granddaughters? lives where she enjoyed helping them prepare projects for Achievement Days. She also enjoyed reading, needlework, and baking goodies.

She was a woman of faith, and she lived it through her involvement in her church and her devotion to the United Methodist Women and its missions. She and Rueben were involved in several mission trips and Mabel enjoyed sending appreciation cards and notes to many.

Mabel also was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was Worthy Matron and a Grand Representative for the State of North Dakota.

Mabel?s family was the center of her life. She is survived by her son Allan (Sue) Goehring, Wimbledon; daughter, Nancy, Jamestown; two granddaughters, Molly (Brian) Bestge, Fargo and Katie (Kurtis) Karn, Fargo; and three great grandchildren; Sam and Mara Bestge, and Kingston Karn, all of Fargo. She is also survived by one brother, Frank (Inez) Orthmeyer, Sioux Falls, SD, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rueben, her parents, and one brother, Pat Orthmeyer.
