Marguerite Ogren

The funeral for Marguerite Ogren will be held Monday, April 29 at 10:30 am at Wesley United Methodist Church in Edgeley, ND. A prayer service will be Sunday, April 28 at 7:00 pm at Williams Funeral Home, in Edgeley. She will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery in Edgeley.

Marguerite Ogren (98) passed peacefully from this earth to her heavenly home on Saturday, April 20, 2019.

Marguerite Ruth Herzer was born December 1, 1920 on the family farm in Ray Township, LaMoure County, ND to Anna L. (Bowen) and Urban Herzer. She grew up and attended school in Ray Township. She attended Edgeley High School where she participated in band and excelled in home ec classes.

Marguerite married Merritt Ogren on December 10, 1944 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Edgeley. They lived on army bases in Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi until after his discharge from the Army in 1945. They settled in Edgeley to work and raise a family. Marguerite was a stay at home mother raising their 3 children and was very involved in supporting their many activities as well as those of her husband.

In what would be her retirement years she served as church custodian with Merritt joining her on the job after retirement from his business. She and Merritt also worked together as caretakers for Mount Hope Cemetery

Marguerite was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist church serving on most committees and areas of service the church had to offer. She was honored to be a Sunday School teacher most of her adult life and served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. She sang in the church choir as well as a mixed quartet for funerals and special events. She was a member of United Methodist Women since before she was married. She was most comfortable as a church basement lady; decorating, creating crafts, cooking, cleaning and preparing for church activities. She was in her element organizing wedding receptions and preparing for church bazaars. After retirement Marguerite took special pride in being a member of the Merry Monday Quilters at the church.

Marguerite was a 50-year member of the VFW Auxiliary. As a newlywed she joined a group of women called the Young Matrons Club. They met once a month to do individual handcrafts and visit. As the years progressed the group was called “Club”.

Marguerite loved to travel and experience new things. She looked forward to camping trips, fishing and especially family picnics. She embraced all things that are part of nature. She loved and appreciated the bird world, having a bird book handy for reference if a new species came her way.

She was most at home in a garden. She and Merritt would share their produce with the church and community groups. Marguerite loved her flower garden and enjoyed making floral arrangements for church. She was also an exquisite seamstress creating beautiful dresses for her daughter and granddaughters as well as prom dresses and figure skating costumes. She was very creative and loved to do many different handcrafts. As getting around became more difficult, Marguerite embroidered dozens of sets of dish towels to give as gifts and share with others.

She was a great cook and baking bread was her forte. She honed her cooking skills by the age of 14 when she worked alone in the farm’s cook car to feed thrashing crews. She baked rolls for her granddaughters’ weddings and church activities.

Marguerite enjoyed playing piano and singing hymns in her spare time. Marguerite found great joy in attending her granddaughters’ activities which were many and varied. She spent her last years happy and content at the Manor St. Joseph where she enjoyed the activities offered, especially the musical groups that came to perform. She valued the staff at the manor and each and every visitor who came through her door.

Marguerite is survived by her children Corbley (Carol) Ogren, Linton, ND, Meredith Meidinger, Jamestown, ND and Bradley Ogren, Sioux Falls, SD. Four granddaughters Jami (Jared) Falk, Bismarck, ND, Jenesa (Sheldon) Feist, Washburn, ND, Julianna (Ross) Lindgren, Fargo, ND and Jocelyn (Alex) Orth, Abbotsford, BC, Canada. Seven great grandchildren: Aden, Austin and Asher Falk, Bismarck, ND; Aubrianna, Paxton, Annika Feist, Washburn, ND and Cora Lindgren, Fargo, ND. Sister-in-law LaVerne Fredenburg, Edgeley, ND and special friends, Deanna and Jim Zenker, Gackle, ND.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, Elizabeth L. Herzer, and daughter-in-law Denise Ogren.
