Marlene M. Gumke, 75, of Gackle, ND, died Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown, ND.
Marlene M. Schuldheisz was born November 6, 1935, southwest of Gackle, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Magdalena (Fischer) Schuldheisz. In 1937, the family moved to a farm in Sharlow Township, near Millarton, ND. Marlene was confirmed in Gackle in 1950. She attended school in Millarton and Jamestown, graduating from Jud High School in 1953. Marlene attained her teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers' College and taught northwest of Kulm, ND for a year, at Feske School west of Jud for a year, then at Letcher school in Alexander Township, north of Alfred, ND, for one year. Marlene taught school for three years before she married Clifford Gumke on October 10, 1954 in Jud, ND. They made their home on a farm in Sharlow Township where she farmed along side Clifford, until they retired and moved to Gackle in 1996. Marlene suffered her first stroke in 1978, but continued to enjoy playing cards, camping, fishing, gardening and her flowers, sewing, and was an excellent cook.
Marlene was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizen Center, Gackle.
Marlene is survived by her husband, Clifford Gumke, Gackle; one daughter, Debra (Steve) Tompkins, Jamestown; two sons, Loren (Sandra) Gumke, Jamestown and Bruce (Nadine Hatch) Gumke, Jud, ND; six grandchildren, Jill (Jason )Thompson, Sarah (Levi) Gienger, Matthew Gumke, Joseph Gumke, Laura Gumke, and Jake Gumke; two step-grandchildren, Justin Torrez and Jessica Torrez; two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Ava Thompson; one step great-grandchild; three sisters, Mavis Hample, LaMoure, ND, Shirley Unverferth, Jamestown, and Linda (Kelly) Olson, Bismarck, ND; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Schuldheisz, Urbana, ND and Florence Schuldheisz, AZ; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice (Bob) Rudnick, Glendive, MT and Floyd (Margaret) Gumke, Trinidad, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-in-law, Patty Gumke; two brothers, Duane and Darrel "Swede" Schuldheisz; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Hample and George Unverferth.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m, Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle, ND with Rev. Linda Schauer officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011 and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
