He graduated from Kloten High School in 1949, entered the United States Air Force in March of 1952 and was honorably discharged in March of 1956. Earlier they had restored the historic Jamestown home built by Judge Glaspell in 1883, which they occupied for 19 years. In retirement they returned to Jamestown in 2000.

Marlyn had many hobbies including reading avidly, camping, fishing, designing wind chimes and preparing saws for his wife to paint. The couple spent nine years participating in Mary's House of Crafts. Marlyn especially enjoyed summer months in Minnesota and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Marlyn is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth; their three children, Calvin (Jackie) Hillesland of Watertown, SD, Barbara (Allan) Martin of Lake George, MN, and Michael (Bethany) Hillesland of Jamestown; eleven grandchildren (Abigail, Rachel, Hannah, Rebekah, Micah, Isaac, Chloe, and Grace of Watertown; Deborah of Lake George; Aubrey and Blake of Jamestown); two siblings, Dennis (Jackie) Hillesland of Augusta, GA, and Audrey Sundquist of Valley City, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ellwood; sister, Evelyn Hillesland; and brother-in-law, John Sundquist.
