Marvin E. Franz, 87, Jamestown, North Dakota died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in Jamestown.
Marvin Ervin Franz was born July 8, 1921 on the family farm near Gackle, North Dakota, the son of Jacob and Fredricka (Rau) Franz. He was raised on the farm and attended the rural school at Cleveland, ND. He married Helga Rutgerson on April 4, 1944 in Jamestown. He served in the US Army from March 28, 1945 until February 18, 1946 as a Military Policeman. They farmed in Buchanan until 1953 when they moved to Jamestown. He was a freight hauler for Burlington Northern; read water meters for the Water Dept. and worked for the Buick Garage. In 1959 until 1970 they owned Franz Recapping and Tire Service. He worked as the front end alignment man at Wilhelm's until he retired. Marvin moved to Hi-Acres Manor in May 2006.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Club and a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
One of Marvin's most loved hobbies was building and flying model airplanes. Hi-Acres' Dream Team made his wish come true last year, once more flying a model airplane while attending the airshow. Seeing the new Super Wal-Mart was another wish they made come true. He loved to shop.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Helga, Jamestown; two daughters, Marlys Sjostrom, Jamestown, and Jannet (Barry) Hendrickson, Denton, TX; one sister, Violet Lengkeek, Olympia, WA; six grandchildren, Scott (Susan) Hayden, Billings, MT, Carmen Hayden, Rapid City, SD, Mike (Jaynette) Jones, Waxahachie, TX, Edwin (Becky) Jones, Fountain Valley, CA, Cathy (Brian) Oertel, Marshfield, WI, Chuck (Erika) Jones, Waxahachie, TX, 5 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; 3 step-great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Adolph Franz and Alfred Franz; one sister, Elsie Falk; two brothers-in-law, Art Lengkeek and Peter Falk; and two sisters-in-law, Ida Franz and Hortensia Franz and one son-in-law, Harley Sjostrom.
Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Monday, August 25, 2008 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown with Pastor Susan Lester, presiding and Chaplain David Fisher officiating.
Visitation: 2:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
