Mary T. Steele, 93, of Jamestown, ND, passed away early Friday morning, October 16, 2020 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Eventide Manor for several years. Mary was born December 17, 1926, in Jamestown, the daughter of Jacob W. and Mary Rose (Plinski) Wagner. She graduated from St. John’s Academy in 1944. Following graduation, she moved to Seattle where she worked for Boeing, assisting in the assembly of aircrafts for WWII. She returned to Jamestown and met Robert J. “Bob” Simmons in 1945. Bob had been a paratrooper in the 101 st Airborne and served in several major campaigns in the European theater. Mary and Bob were married in 1945. They resided in Jamestown where they owned and operated Biss Cleaners and raised two boys, Guy and Chris Simmons. Bob died unexpectedly in 1963 and Mary worked for Seaborn Insurance Company and later at Alfred Dickey Library. She married Delbert Steele in 1979 and they continued to make their home in Jamestown for several years. Mary was a devout member of St. James Basilica and a member of the church choir for numerous years. She is survived by her son, Chris (Dory) Simmons of Olympia, WA, and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her son, Guy A. Simmons, her brother, Jacob “Jay” W. Wagner, Jr., and her sisters Rita Moser, Elizabeth “Beth” Case, and Thea Wagner. There will be no services. Being a devote Catholic, Mary requested that those who knew her pray for her in their own way.
Burial: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
