Maynard J. Carpenter, 94, Jamestown, ND passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND.
Maynard J. Carpenter was the son of Peter M. and Emma (Potratz) Carpenter. He was born on a farm south of Sanborn, North Dakota on March 2, 1923. In 1924, he moved to Sanborn with his family. He attended and graduated from Sanborn Public School. Following graduation he went to Idaho and worked on the construction of the Farragot Naval Training Base.
On April 3, 1943, he was drafted into the United State Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. After Basic Training at Atlantic City, New Jersey, he was sent to Drew Field at Tampa, Florida. He left from San Francisco, California, to serve his country in Australia, New Guinea, and The Philippines. He received his honorable discharge from the Army in October 1946.
Following his discharge he farmed south of Eckelson, North Dakota. He married Leona Gruchalla in April 1968. They owned the Eckelson Bar until 1972 when they moved to Valley City and he drove milk truck for Barnes County Creamery. In 1974, they moved to Lisbon, North Dakota where he worked for the North Dakota Soldiers Home in maintenance. He retired in 1985 and they moved to Spiritwood Lake. Later they moved to the Jerry Sova farm where he assisted with the farm work. His wife Leona passed away in April of 1996.
He married Jean Carpenter in February of 1999 and they moved to Jamestown in 2006. He will always be remembered as a very kind person who was eager to help anyone at any time.
He was a member of Eckelson-Sanborn American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, and Men of Trinity.
He is survived by his wife Jean, Jamestown, ND; one son, Peter (Laura), St. Paul, MN; one stepson, Edmund (Rennae) Gruchalla, Fargo, ND; three stepdaughters, Sharon (Paul) Ostrye, Bethesda, MD, Patricia (Jerry) Sova, Jamestown, ND, Priscilla (Larry) Turnboom, Meadowlands, MN.
He also leaves behind one grandson, Peter; one granddaughter, Jessica; five step grandsons; and four step granddaughters.
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Monday, February 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Susan Haukaas, officiating.
Visitation : One hour before service at church.
Spring Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sanborn, ND.
