Myra Ovind

Myra Ovind, 81, Jamestown, North Dakota died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Central Dakota Village in Jamestown.

Myra Gross was born September 3, 1922 in Eureka, South Dakota the daughter of Henry H. and Martha (Lapp) Gross. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1940. Myra attended Jamestown College and received a standard 2 year degree in 1942. She began teaching in 1942 at age 20 in Carson and later in Larimore. Several summers she attended the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis. In 1948 she moved to Wishek, ND where she taught high school English and music and she started Wishek High School's first band. Myra married Herbert Ovind on August 2, 1952 and they resided in Emerado, ND and during this time she taught school in Mekinock and Manville. Herbert died on September 4, 1966. Myra moved to Jamestown in 1967. She received a bachelors degree in education from Jamestown College in 1969. Myra taught in the Jamestown Public School system until retiring in the mid 1980's after 35 years of teaching. Since December 2003 Myra enjoyed residing at Rock of Ages in Jamestown.

Myra was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Delta Kappa Gamma, University Women and J Notes. She also directed the church choir for a few years.

Myra is survived by a son, Richard (Susan) Ovind, Jamestown, a step-son, Ronald Ovind, Parker, CO, one sister, Lillian Estes, Fullerton, CA, two nieces, Hazel Smyth and Marie Estes, a nephew, Charles Estes, all of Fullerton, CA and three step-grandchildren, Tim, Bryan and Blain Ovind.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Paul Ovind and one sister, Viola Joos.

Funeral Service: 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Terri Akkerman officiating.

Visitation: 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday, June 11, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Home.

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Friday, June 11, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
