Myrtle V. (Gatz)Henderson, 104, Jamestown, ND passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at Ave Maria Village Nursing Home, Jamestown, ND.
Myrtle Viola Pottratz was born December 30, 1911 in Moody County, Elkton, South Dakota, the daughter of Walter R. and Minnie A. (Kagemann) Pottratz. When she was 5 years old the family moved from Watertown, SD to a farm near Nortonville, ND. Myrtle attended a rural school till she was in the 7th grade when the family moved to Millarton, ND, which is 18 miles south of Jamestown. She continued her education through 9th grade and then started work as a hired girl for a the owners of Murphy's Lumber. She joined St. John's Lutheran Church with her family and was confirmed in 1928 by Rev. W.W.A. Keller. Myrtle married Albert Gatz on September 25, 1930 at St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage by Rev Keller. They lived in North Dakota until 1940 when a move took them to West Chester, IL, where Albert worked at Douglas Aircraft and Myrtle worked for several companies, including, Jefferson Electric, Columbia Envelope Factory, a grocery store and at Set Screw Manufacturing Co. in Bartlett, IL where she was for 17 years when she retired. They returned to Jamestown in 1986. Albert died October 3, 1992. Myrtle married Hugo V. Henderson on April 18, 1998, they lived in IL. Hugo died January 8, 1999.
Myrtle was active at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Barlett, IL and also at St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown. She sang in the choir, was a member of Ladies Aid the quilting group and the married couples club.
Myrtle loved to sew and quilt. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers and also cooking.
Myrtle is survived by one son, Arnold Gatz, Surprise, AZ; two daughters, Elaine (Wilbert) Piel, Eagle River, WI and Sharon L. Kuester, Surprise, AZ; one stepdaughters, Mary Ann Henderson Nelson, Gold Canyon, AZ; 15 grandchilden; 21 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands; a daughter, Phyllis; her parents; and four sisters, Lois, Opal, Grace and Loretta.
Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Friday, June 10, 2016 at Good Shepherd Chapel, Ave Maria Village with Pastor Erik Weber.
Visitation; One hour prior to service.
