Nina Van Winkle

Nina Van Winkle, 96, Jamestown, North Dakota died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown. Nina Swartaut was born July 18, 1907 in Sanborn, North Dakota the daughter of Louis and Martha Swartaut. In 1913 they moved to Courtenay and lived on the Hoffman farm now known as Darold Soupiers. She graduated from Courtenay High School in 1925 and attended Valley City State College and NDSU in Fargo. She taught 36 years in North Dakota starting out in a rural school in Ashland Township. She taught in a number of rural schools and then went to teach in Lake Washington, Warwick, ND for 4 years. She also taught at Leal, Buchanan, Pillsbury, Hannaford, Kensal, Courtenay and Grade Principal in Central School, Cooperstown, ND. She loved to teach school. Nina married Allen Van Winkle in 1942 and lived in Pillsbury, ND and Hannaford after making their home on the farm south of Courtenay. They spent 25 years in the Southland. The last 15 years they owned their own home in Mesa, Arizona.

Nina was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women of Wimbledon, ND, Retired Teacher's and the Young at Heart Club, Courtenay, holding offices in all.

Nina is survived by her husband, Allen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister and a nephew.

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at St. John's United Methodist Church, Wimbledon, ND with Rev. Michael Ward officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 to 9:00 PM, Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at Eddy Funeral Home.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, North Dakota.
