Norm was born April 4, 1925 in Jamestown, the son of Ole and Jennie (Grasto) Broten. He attended Roosevelt Grade School and graduated from Jamestown High School.

On March 13, 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy V6 program at Valley City, ND. He was stationed throughout the United States during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1946 he returned to Jamestown.

Norm and Charlotte ""Char"" Landon were married June 17, 1948 in Jamestown, ND.

Norm was apprenticed to E.A. Moline where he learned bricklaying from his uncle, Art Lee. He became a journeyman bricklayer and worked throughout North Dakota in his trade. He worked on many commercial buildings in Jamestown including Trinity Lutheran Church in 1955. He worked for Moline Construction Company, Jamestown, until his retirement.

Norm played hockey in high school, skiied at Vail, Colorado the year it opened in 1962, played golf, and enjoyed gardening. His passion was fishing. He skillfully filleted his walleyes and shared them with friends and neighbors. He greatly enjoyed his retirement years pursuing his hobbies.

Norm had a deep appreciation for nature, and taught his family the beauty of simple pleasures--a flock of geese flying, a pheasant spied in a ditch. Every car trip became an adventure looking for wildlife.
