Oscar Sidney Erickson, 98, of rural Ypsilanti, ND passed away March 10, 2015 at his home. Oscar was born on a farm in the Marion, North Dakota area, the second of nine children born to William and Oline (Olson) Erickson. The family moved to the Adrian area, and then later to a farm near Ypsilanti where he resided for most of the rest of his life. He attended school in Homer Township, graduating from the eighth grade. His life was filled with farming from a young age, except when he was playing baseball. He played first base for the Homer Township baseball team for a number of years. Throughout his adult life he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, often using the radio to combine farming with Twins games.
Oscar enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 21, 1942. He trained as an aircraft mechanic and serviced airplanes on many different islands while stationed in the South Pacific. He was discharged from the Marines with a rank of Tech Sergeant on November 9, 1945. On September 19, 1958 Oscar married Erma Derheim in Jamestown, North Dakota. They worked on the family farm until Oscar retired in the mid 1990's. Even then, he continued to raise cattle lest he find too much free time on his hands.
Oscar and Erma were members of the First Baptist Church in Jamestown for many years, where he served on the Trustee Board.
He is survived by two daughters, Jeanne (Darryl) Berntson, Jamestown, and Kathy Erickson, Ypsilanti, four grandchildren, Chris Finch, Jonathan Berntson, Jared Berntson, and Kayla Reed. Also surviving four sisters, Evelyn Clemens, Lillian Peckham, Arline Lueck, and Leone (Don) Willey, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers, Henry, Carl, and Floyd, one sister, Wilma Dally.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, March 14, 2015 at First Assembly of God Church in Jamestown with Pastor Jeff Wiedenmeyer officiating.
Visitation wil be from 3:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, March 13, 2015 at Eddy Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Highland Home Cemetery.
