Patricia Cherney, of Jamestown ND, formally of Courtenay ND died peacefully January 1, 2025 at CHI- St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, ND.
Patricia (Pat) Magdalen Cherney was born on September 14, 1932 on the family farm near Dickinson, ND. Her parents were James and Mary (Zastoupil) Samek. She was the seventh child of the family of fifteen. She initially attended a one room school in Dickinson through the 5th grade. In the spring of 1943 at the age of 10, her parents purchased a farm north of Wimbledon, ND where she attended Dover School through 8th grade. She attended high school at St. James Academy, a Catholic boarding school. She graduated high school in 1950.
In 1953, she married the love of her life, Laudie Cherney of Forbes, ND. They were married October 14, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Wimbledon. They initially lived on the Cherney family farm near Forbes until Laudie found a farm to purchase in 1955 near Courtenay. She and Laudie built their family of five on this farm and remained there until November, 2011 when they moved to Jamestown.
Besides raising her family, Pat found time for many hobbies. She crocheted many items for family and friends including over 200 last names for wall hangings. She spent many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens on the farm. She was a great cook and baker making everyone happy when she had fresh donuts and caramel rolls available for the taking. Pat was very active in her church teaching Sunday school for many years, participating on the Altar Society and was an active member of the Tabernacle at St. James Basilica. Pat was the organist for 52 years at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Courtenay and continued to play the organ for Masses at two nursing homes in Jamestown until 2020. Pat was also a member of the American Legion and Farmer’s Union.
Pat is survived by her five children, Dave Cherney, Terry Cherney, Patty (Dave) Offerdahl, Tim (Angie) Cherney and Linda (Tom) Stafford; Sixteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; three brothers (Vitrus, Steve and Frank) and one sister (Bertha). She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 4 sisters (Mary, Margaret, Mildred, Georgie Ann), 6 brothers (Valentine, George, Laudie, Wenzel, Bernard, Benny), a grandson (Matthew) and great granddaughter (Maggie).
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Pat’s memory to the Great Plains Food Bank or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2025 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, ND, with the Very Reverend C. F. Wilhelm, celebrant.
Visitation: 4:30 p.m.to 6:30p.m., Thursday, January 9 at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown and one hour before the Mass at the church.
Rosary: 6:30 p.m., Thursday, January 9 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Eddy Funeral Home.
Interment: St. Boniface Cemetery, Wimbledon, ND.
