Phyllis Denchfield

October 3, 1944 — June 4, 2023

Phyllis Denchfield, Jamestown, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 4th, 2023.  She walked out of church and into the arms of Jesus.

Phyllis Jean Guthmiller was born on October 3, 1944, to Peter and Dorothea (Martin) Guthmiller. She was raised on a farm near Pettibone, ND, a place which was near and dear to her heart.  As recently as Mother’s Day of this year, she spoke of how she still missed it at times.

After graduating from high school, Phyllis attended Dakota Business College in Fargo for a year and then moved to Minneapolis.  This is where she met dad.  She and Ray Denchfield were married on August 5th, 1967, in McClusky, ND.  They lived in Minneapolis for a year before moving to Jamestown in 1968.

When we were young, mom worked part time as a bookkeeper and sold Avon.  She later spent many years at Leever’s and Hugo’s. Since “retiring”, she has worked part time at the All-Vets Club.

Mom dedicated much of her time and energy serving others and serving God.  She loved playing organ at church, singing in the choir, and spending time with the LWML and Circle ladies.  She and dad were involved in Veterans related causes, something she continued after his passing.  In recent years, she also found joy in volunteering at Orphan Grain Train.  Mom had a servant’s heart.

“Grandma” was her favorite role.  She made countless trips to Fargo for holidays, birthday parties, Christmas programs, hockey games, band concerts, and theatre performances.

She is survived by two daughters, Pam (Mike) Grothman and Patty Denchfield, two grandsons who were the apples of her eye, Ryan and Andrew Grothman, sister, Lorraine (Gary) Asmus, brother Gordon (Alene) Guthmiller, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Phyllis and Ralph Mergen, sister-in-law Mary Denchfield, ten nephews, four nieces, and two cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and brother-in-law Millie and Robert Meyer, sister-in-law Becky Knigge, brother-in-law Dwayne Denchfield, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Judy and Ed Farley.
