Ragnar Holm

Ragnar Holm, 97, Jamestown, ND, died December 17, 2008 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.

Ragnar John (RJ) Holm was born June 30, 1911 on the family farm near Kensal. RJ?s parents, Lars and Annie (Stahl) Holm, both came from Sweden in the 1880?s. Lars Holm and his four brothers all homesteaded in the Kensal area. RJ spent his life working on the family farm along with two brothers Nels and Andy and his sister Esther. In addition to grain crops they raised dairy and beef cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens. RJ actively operated the homestead until 2002 when he sold his livestock and farm equipment. After suffering a stroke in 2006, he moved to the care facility in Jamestown where he lived until his death on December 17, 2008 at the age of 97.

An active member of the community throughout his life time, RJ served on the Kensal Township board for more than 20 years, on the board of directors of The Farmers Union Oil Company of Jamestown, and was a member of the Edmunds Farmers Union elevator. In 1954 he ran for County Commissioner, Third Commissioner District, Stutsman County. He was also a longstanding member of the Kensal Methodist Church.

RJ often entered exhibits in fairs and winter shows in the area and won numerous ribbons and awards.

RJ is survived by a nephew, Dr. Robert Miller of Windsor, Colorado; and two nieces, Violet Jansen of Lacey, Washington, and Marlys Vining of Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Gilbert, Nels and Andy; his sisters Edith and Esther; a brother-in-law Wilbur Miller; and sister-in-law Violet Holm.

Funeral Service: 10:30 AM, Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Kensal United Methodist Church, Kensal, ND, with Pastor Jeff Levy officiating.
