Randall “Randy” Rex Roberts, 67, Jamestown, ND, died suddenly Friday, December 23, 2017 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Randy was born on April 12, 1950 in Kensal, ND, the son of Loren and Mavis (Sizer) Roberts. He grew up on the family farm in Lenton Township and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1968. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from November, 1969 to November, 1973 aboard the USS Cochran, a guided missile destroyer. Much of that time he was stationed near Vietnam and was in Saigon for a time.
Randy farmed on the family farm southwest of Jamestown from 1974 until his death, producing crops such as wheat, barley, sunflowers, corn and soybeans. He received the area’s “Outstanding Young Farmer” Award in 1983, and he attended Jamestown College fulltime for two years from 1989-1991. Randy felt very close to his brother, Dwight, and he dearly appreciated Dwight’s assistance in farming.
Randy had a special fondness for his niece, Tara, and he assisted in her daycare, taking her to school, piano and dance classes – never missing any of Tara’s performances or special events. He, Tara and her Grandmother Mavis enjoyed being at the family farm together. He loved teaching Tara about farm life and eventually how to operate various farm equipment. Randy was an avid fan of Jamestown High School and University of Jamestown sports, frequently attending games and tournaments. He enjoyed listening to music, watching classic movies, and he loved driving his Mustang GT – often to games and tournaments.
Randy absolutely loved farming, and despite the challenges farming presented, and there were many, he always maintained an unwavering faith and a positive attitude; and he could not imagine doing anything but farming. He was kind and giving, had a great sense of humor; and he will be dearly missed by his family.
Randy is survived by his father, Loren M. Roberts, Ave Maria Village, Jamestown; one brother, Dwight (Jennifer) Roberts, Jamestown; one sister, Rita (James) Morris, Jamestown; a niece, Tara (Eric) Watne, Jamestown; a half-brother, Charles “Bruce” (Sharon) Shockley, Wimbledon; and a special calico cat, Ms. Purr, who he has cared for since his mother’s passing in 2015. Randy was preceded in death by his mother, Mavis; his brother, Loren Keith Roberts, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Good Shepherd Chapel, Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND with Deacon Ken Votava, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Good Shepherd Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
