Raymond \""Ray\"" Denchfield, 73, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Friday, November 8, 2010 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND after a short battle with cancer.
Ray was born December 5, 1936 in Chaska, MN, the son of Emil and Evelyn (Barclay) Denchfield. Ray grew up and went to school in St. Cloud, MN, graduating from St. Cloud Tech in 1954. A few years later, in 1960, he joined the United States Army and was listed as active duty for several months. Following his service in the Army he joined the Army Reserve until 1966. On August 5, 1967 he married Phyllis Guthmiller at St. Johns Lutheran Church in McClusky, ND. The two lived in Minneapolis, MN for one year before moving to Jamestown in October 1968. In 1969 Ray began working for the Jamestown Sun and worked there for 30 years as an advertising consultant before retiring in 1999. During his retirement he worked the gaming at the All Vet's Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post 14, the 40 & 8 Voiture, AmVets and Sad Sacks.
Ray enjoyed playing cribbage, bingo and was an avid Vikings and Twins fan. He mostly enjoyed visiting and being around people, especially his family and friends.
Ray is survived by his wife, Phyllis, Jamestown; two daughters, Pam (Mike) Grothman and Patty Denchfield, both of Fargo; two grandsons, Ryan and Andrew Grothman, Fargo; two sisters, Judy (Edd) Farley, Katy, TX and Phyllis (Ralph) Mergen, Maplewood, MN; one brother, Dwayne (Mary) Denchfield, Eden Prairie, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Becky Knigge, and an infant brother, Daniel.
