Reuben Schlecht, 81, of Medina, ND, died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown, ND.
Reuben Schlecht was born on September 8, 1927 near Fredonia, ND, the son of Rudolph and Magdalena (Gunsch) Schlecht. In 1929, his family moved to the Cleveland, ND area and in 1934 moved five miles southeast of Medina, ND where Reuben grew up and was educated. He married Lillian M. Mayer on December 28, 1950 in Medina. They lived and worked with Reuben's parents for one year, then he was inducted into the US Army. After six months of training, Reuben spent sixteen months in Korea in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery 21st Division. He was discharged as a Sergeant 1st Class and returned to the farm which they purchased in 1963, today known as the Windy Hill Ranch.
Reuben was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Medina where he served in the Men's Organization, taught Sunday school, and served on various boards. He was also a member of the Adam Job Post 245, Medina, the Honor Guard, and the Medina Lions Club. Reuben served on the Medina Public School board for 9 years and drove bus, he served on the Election board, and the Chicago township board.
Reuben enjoyed singing with the Schlecht Family Singers and being a member of Germans from Russia. He also enjoyed farming, especially cultivating his corn, and woodworking, particularly making cedar chests for his grandchildren.
Reuben is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lillian Schlecht, Medina; three sons, Ron (Paulette) Schlecht, West Fargo, ND, Collette (Nora) Schlecht, Medina; and Loren (Karen) Schlecht, Medina; six grandchildren, Nicole Schlecht, Naomi (Aaron) Lucht, Erica (Nathan) Oster, Troy (Nancy) Schlecht; Tonia (Scott Perry) Schlecht, and Allyce Schlecht; five great grandchildren, Cameron, Faith, Chase, Christian, and Camden; brothers and sisters, Gideon Schlecht, Medina, Clarence (Lorine) Schlecht, Medina, Leona (Marvin) Moser, Medina, Alvin (Arlene) Schlecht, Medina, Alvina (John) Broste, Bismarck, ND, and Hilda (Trent) Limbacher, San Diego, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Walter & Darlene Schlecht and sister-in-law, Viola Schlecht.
Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Medina, with Pastor Darwin Kopfmann officiating.
Visitation: 1:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: Medina Cemetery, Medina, ND.
