Rev. Darrell Schultz

Rev. Darrell Kenneth Schultz, 88, Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at his home.

Darrell Schultz, son of Emil J. & Emma (Westphal) Schultz, was born in Fargo, ND, April 4, 1924, and was baptized in First Lutheran Church, Fargo, on May 12, 1924. He attended rural East Gill grade school and graduated from Chaffee High School in 1942. He was confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church, Embden, ND July 29, 1938 and was active in the Luther League (young peoples? program). During World War II he helped his father farm 800 acres near Wheatland, ND.

Later he attended Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in August, 1949. He then attended Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa and graduated in May, 1952, receiving a Bachelor of Ministry degree sometime later. He was ordained in St. John Lutheran Church, Embden, June 8, 1952.

Darrell married Jeannette Sommerfeld, daughter of William and Gladys (Kellerman) Sommerfeld, in St. John Church on June 10, 1952. They immediately moved to San Francisco, CA where he had received a call from The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Four sons were born in San Francisco and one was born in Long Beach, CA.

Darrell served parishes in San Francisco, South Gate and King City, CA, and the Scranton, ND and Golden Valley/Dodge, ND American Lutheran and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America parishes. His greatest concern was ?to use the Word of God validly? and thus help people. In California he was active in Boy Scouts serving on various committees and as Treasurer, and was even inducted into the Order Of The Arrow. He also served in the school PTA as Treasurer and later as Auditor. He also served on District Committees and in Conference Offices in the American Lutheran Church.

Darrell and Jeannette retired to Jamestown, ND in 1993 after 41 years of fulltime Parish ministry. Since retirement he has served numerous parishes as Interim Pastor and ?Sunday Supply? and has served several years as Secretary of the Jamestown Chapter of United Sportsmen of ND and Banquet Ticket Sales Chairman. He much enjoyed deer and antelope hunting, cartridge reloading, fishing, woodworking, building some lapidary equipment for making small jewelry, gardening and making quilts for Lutheran World Relief with his wife.

Darrell is survived by his sons: Steven, Simi Valley, CA; Timothy (Maureen), Los Angeles, CA; David (Xuan), Tucson, AZ; Michael (Linda), Simi Valley, CA; Kenneth, Simi Valley, CA; eight grandchildren; a sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, numerous nephews and nieces, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (died March, 2005), 3 brothers and sister.

His body is being donated to the School Of Medicine, University of ND, Grand Forks. Eventually the cremated remains will be buried in the family plot in St. John Cemetery, Embden.
