Richard “Dick” Berland, 66, Jamestown, ND passed away Wednesday February 19 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Dick was born on April 29, 1953 in Minot to Don and L. Jean Berland (Berg). He graduated from Hettinger High School in 1971.
Dick married Anita on December 27, 1975. They lived in Scott City, Kansas and welcomed their first daughter Christine Kaye in 1977. They moved to Jamestown in 1979 when Dick started working for Jacques Seed Company. They welcomed their second daughter Sarah Anne in 1980. Dick continued to work in the seed business and transitioned to Mycogen in 1991 where he would spend the remainder of his working career. After 47 years in the seed business, he retired in May 2018.
He was an avid outdoorsman. Dick had a love for flying and earned his private pilot’s license. Dick loved to hunt, fish, and was an archery enthusiast. He loved going prairie dog hunting with his brothers and family fishing/camping trips to Lake Sakakawea. He also took up trap shooting and was able to compete in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Arizona with his brother, Larry. In July of 2019, Dick won the Veteran Category in Singles Champion Event, Shooting a 198/200.
Most of all, his greatest pride and joy was being a Grandpa. He loved going fishing with them in the summer. He couldn’t wait for them to take over being captain of the boat. Dick attended every event the grandkids had, whether it was a game, school program, or boy scout camp. He truly is their biggest fan. More than anything, he just loved being with them.
Those that continue to love him: Daughters; Christy (Jason) Vogel, Jamestown, ND; Sarah (Michael) Olson, Casselton, ND. Grandchildren; Kyra and Hunter Vogel; Maisen, Myah, and Maxx Olson. Mother; Jean Berland; Siblings; Larry (Elsie) Berland, Linda (Kevin) Klein.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Berland and brother Ron Berland.
