Richard "Rick" Sandness, 60, Jamestown, ND, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown, ND.
Richard Elmer Sandness was born January 13, 1948 in Valley City, the son of Elmer and Evelyn (Dahl) Sandness. He was raised on the family farm near Litchville, ND and attended the Litchville School. Following his graduation in 1967, he entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in both the United States and Korea from 1968 to 1970. After his discharge, Rick returned to North Dakota and attended Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake. While there, he began working for North Dakota Job Service. He also served in the National Guard. On June 30, 1972, he married Elizabeth Diemert at Sanborn, ND and they resided in Munich, ND. In 1974, they moved to Fargo where Rick continued working for Job Service and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1977. They lived in Grafton, ND for a short time before moving to Jamestown in 1980 following Rick's promotion to regional manager with Job Service. He worked at Job Service for a total of 28 years and retired in 2003.
Rick served on various boards including the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Boy Scouts, Salvation Army Advisory Board, and many others. Rick was a member of St. James Basilica, Kiwanis, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Classic Car Club, and was a founding director and current president of the All Vets Club.
Rick enjoyed woodworking, tinkering in his garage, riding motorcycle, restoring his '49 Ford pickup, spending time with his family, and helping others.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); mother, Evelyn, Jamestown, sons: Scott Richard (Karla) Sandness, Jamestown; Ryan Nicholas (Jessica) Sandness, Fargo; Dana Christopher (Megan) Sandness, Grand Forks; sisters: Eunice Mesec, Littleton, CO; Connie (Dan) Jeske, Jamestown; brother: Warren Sandness, Minot; numerous nephews and nieces; and numerous family members who knew him simply as "Grandpa Rick".
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer, and in-laws, Lillian and Clifford Diemert.
