His father died when he was eleven years old, a fact that contributed to his living in several different locations during his teen years as his mother searched for work.

He returned to ND and lived with his siblings before moving to Rosemount, MN to live with relatives there and complete his high school education. He served in the U.S. Army 1950-1952, stationed in Germany. He married Jackie Gordon in 1954 at Pine City, MN and they moved to Victorville, CA.
He began his career with the California Interstate Telephone Company in Victorville in 1955. He was transferred to Ridgecrest, CA in 1957. He spent one year working in Wisconsin for a cable contractor but returned to CA to work for the same company which was then know as Continental Telephone Company. During his time with the phone company, he worked as a cable splicer, service control supervisor, and plant technician. He retired in 1987 after 32 years of employment. The phone company he worked for is now known as Verizon.
He married the love of his life, Marie Cordova in 1983. Following his retirement, they lived in Arizona for a few years before settling in Branson and then Nixa, Missouri. She died on September 14, 1999.
Robert moved to Jamestown in 2001 to be near family. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown.
