Robert Charles Murphy, Jr. went to his rest on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Eventide, Jamestown, ND. He was shared by Trinity Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown as Director of Music Ministries and Choir Director, respectively, since February of 2016.
Bob was born December 26, 1956 in Oakland, CA to Robert and Clothilde (Teal) Murphy. He was raised in Vallejo, CA. He graduated high school from Rio Lindo Adventist Academy in Healdsburg, CA and went to college at Pacific Union College (PUC) in Angwin, CA where he received a Bachelors in Music. He attended Westminster Choir College where he earned a Masters in Sacred Music, specifically in Organ Performance and Choir Directing.
Bob was interested in and influenced by music at an early age, as both parents were involved in their church music program. His dad, Robert Sr. directed the choir and his mother, Teal, was the church organist. Bob's introduction to music came at choir rehearsals. He was placed in his bassinet, next to his mom, who was seated at the organ! While "playing church" with his cousins, Bobby was always the choir director.
Many people helped to mold and shape Bob's love of music. His Dad would often take Bob to the San Francisco Symphony. An extended family member took him to the Bach Festivals and still others mentored his organ training from high school, college and graduate school through to employment at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of North St. Paul, MN by seeing that he got opportunities to play special and unique organs at PUC, Mont La Salle Monastery in Napa, CA, St. Paul, and other places across the United States. For more than 20 years, Bob gave back to the community where he grew up by organizing a musical program at the Mont La Salle Monastery, where he invited his old and new friends, young musicians and vocalists and community music lovers to participate. Any donations that came from the music appreciation went to a local charity. He mentored the youth in his local communities by encouraging them to practice and play their instruments; often inviting them to come and play at the local church.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clothilde and his brother, Kenneth Brown. He is survived by his niece, Kimberly Brown-Smith (Ronald) and nephew, Kendall Brown (Angela). He will be missed by a host of cousins, musicians, friends and sports enthusiasts from San Francisco to Saudi Arabia.
Many thanks to the dedicated care teams at Eventide, Jamestown Regional Medical Center, Sanford Clinic/Hospitals, Guardian Angels, Red River Hospice, and many friends who supported Robert through these past several months.
