Robert J. O'Brien, 77, Jamestown, ND, died Monday June 5, 2006 at his home in Jamestown, ND.
Robert James O'Brien was born September 18, 1928 at Wahpeton, ND, the son of Patrick James and Esther (Henjum) O'Brien. He attended public schools in Minnesota and North Dakota and received diplomas from Fargo Public Schools and Wahpeton College of Science. He also attended Moorhead State College. Robert enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1945 and served in Texas as a postal clerk and in Japan as a supply sergeant. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1948 and from the Air Force Reserve in 1952. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Robert was the Branch Manager for Oliver Farm Equipment Company in Fargo, ND for 12 years. He also held various positions with Oliver (White) Farm Equipment for over 30 years. During that time he earned numerous regional and national awards for sales performance. He was an officer in the Fargo Wholesale Implement Association and also a longtime member of the Jamestown Salesman's Club.
On June 23, 1949, he married Ruth E. Severson in Kindred, ND. During their 51 years of marriage, they lived in Fargo, Minot and Jamestown, ND. He enjoyed spending summers at the lake cabin he built in Minnesota with his family. He excelled doing hobbies of metal work, woodworking and repairing small machines. His gardening and pie making skills were admired and enjoyed by many.
Survivors include 3 daughters: Linda (John) Lyche, Onalaska, WI; Patricia (John) Dardis, Jamestown, ND; Cynthia (Jay) Nimens, Crookston, MN; 5 siblings: Dorothy Wilder, Ivins, UT; Richard (Gloria), Oklahoma City, OK; Beverly (Ev) Miller, Bismarck, ND; Leanora Norgren, Oregon, WI; Nancy (Vern) Wickoren, Fargo, ND; 8 grandchildren: Jill, Eric and Adam Lyche; Tim and Megan Dardis and Reid, Ty and Ethan Nimens.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth in 2002; and infant son in 1958 and a sister, Patricia Murray.
Robert will be sadly missed by the family that meant so much to him. He leaves a legacy of strong moral values, decency and family commitment.
Funeral - 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND
Visitation - 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND
Interment - Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, ND
