Robert Emanuel Redmann

November 24, 1941 — December 24, 2006

Robert ""Bob"" Emanuel Redmann, aged 65 of West Fargo, passed away suddenly in Saugatuck, Michigan on December 24, 2006 while celebrating Christmas with his family. He will be sadly and greatly missed by his wife Elaine, children, grandchildren, brother, and two sisters.

Bob was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on November 24th, 1941 to E.F. and Esther (Schulz) Redmann. He grew up on a farm near Millarton, North Dakota and attended school there. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1959 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of North Dakota in 1964. From 1964 to 1968, Bob continued his studies at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he received a Master's degree in botany in 1966 and a Ph.D. in plant ecology in 1968.

Robert Redmann was united in marriage with Elaine Mayer in 1963. When Bob began his teaching career in 1968, the couple moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Bob taught at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon until his retirement in 2000. He published books and articles in his field, supervised many graduate students and was well respected by both students and peers. His specialty was grassland ecology, but he loved all of nature.

Bob is survived by his wife and best friend of 43 years Elaine of West Fargo, son John (Aymee Gmur) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, daughter Jennifer (Kevin Brady) of Kalamazoo, Michigan, daughter Susan (Grant) Brodeur of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and son Paul (Jody) of Lockport, Illinois. He is also survived by the joys of his life, his two granddaughters Payton and Avery Brodeur. He was excited about the expected arrival of a grandson to Paul and Jody in March 2007.

Bob is also survived by his brother Earl (Edna Koenig) of Jamestown, North Dakota, sister Gertrude (Myron) Pryor of Pingree, North Dakota, and sister Joan of Fargo, North Dakota. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Lorraine Christensen.

Bob's family was always amazed at what he could fix and do. He was the ultimate handyman. He was widely curious and had many interests, including genealogy, horticulture, Twins baseball, restoring his old John Deere tractor, home remodeling, and especially crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Bob and Elaine enjoyed working on puzzles together, and as in life, they did their best work as a team. Bob loved to spend time with his granddaughters and made many trips to Thunder Bay to visit. The night before he died, Bob enjoyed reading Payton her bedtime stories. His family will deeply miss his quiet, reassuring presence, infinite patience and kind heart.
