Rueben W. Scherbenske, 81, Jamestown, North Dakota died Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Central Dakota Village in Jamestown.
Rueben was born March 7, 1923 in Bowdle, South Dakota the son of John and Lydia (Hoffman) Scherbenske. He moved with his family to Jamestown in 1927. He attended school in Jamestown, graduating from Jamestown High School in 1941. Rueben enlisted in the US Army on April 14, 1943 in Ft. Snelling, MN. He was stationed at Fort Robinson in Crawford, NE where he was a medic and cared for German Prisoners of War during World War II and was discharged on Feb. 1, 1946. Rueben married Iola Buckingham Matteson on May 8, 1945 in Colorado Springs, CO. They returned to Jamestown in 1946 where he was a dairy farmer. He was in the gravel hauling business with his father before he started his own excavating, sand, gravel and construction business in 1957.
Rueben's passion was going to auction sales and he may have been the best whist player of all time. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown.
Rueben is survived by his wife, Iola of Jamestown, nine children, Danny (Sharla) Matteson, Black Hawk, SD; Gerry (Judy) Scherbenske, Jamestown; Shirley (John) Krohn, Eden Prairie, MN; Nick (Rita) Scherbenske, Jamestown; Lydia Jean (Jim) Hillerson, Fargo, ND; Pam (Jerry) Szarkowski, Lakewood, CO; Mike Scherbenske, Winnemucca, NV; Sharon (Leo) Goldade, Decono, CO and Tina Scherbenske, Fargo, 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Rev. Marvin (Eva) Scherbenske, Devils Lake, ND and Jim (Lois Mae) Scherbenske, Falls Church, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Claudine Kay, in infancy, one brother, Elder and two sisters, Alma Beeman and Naomi Roesler.
Funeral Service: 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 16, 2004 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown with Revs. Bryce Tahran and Gary Ball-Kilbourne officiating.
Visitation: 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 14 and Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, North Dakota.
