Russel J. Hoggarth, Mandan & Garrison, ND (formerly of Wimbledon, ND) died Late Wednesday evening, January 20, 2021, at Miller Pointe Nursing Center.
Born in the midwife’s house in Kensal, ND, on November 4, 1942, to Vern and Irene (Kramer) Hoggarth. He went to school and graduated from Kensal High in 1961. He worked on the family farm and did various other jobs before marrying.
Anyone who knows Russel knows how much he loved to dance, so it should not be a surprised that he met his sweetheart, Eileen Groth, at a local dance. After a bit of a romance, Russel and Eileen were married on May 25, 1966 in Wimbledon.
Russel and Eileen had 2 children, Ronald in 1967, and 3 years later, Lisa in 1970. Sadly, Ronald passed away in 2014 from complications of kidney failure and pneumonia.
Russel was a devoted family man, and enjoyed being a leader in his community. Much of his time was spent in running the John Deere dealership in Wimbledon, which he owned and operated for 38 years. During that time, he was named Outstanding Young Man of America (1970); spent many hours umpiring softball games throughout the county and surrounding areas; was an active member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church; served as a first responder; assisted with community fundraisers too numerous to name; and did everything he could to help the citizens of his community by serving as mayor for a number of years. So many of these things included his favorite pastimes of visiting, cooking, and making sure he made it to as many dances as possible. In 2004, after nearly 38 years of love and devotion he lost his beloved Eileen.
On April 5, 2008, Russel married Barbara Ziegler (whom he also met at a dance), and moved to Bismarck ND. They enjoyed many summers golfing together all over ND (Russel had never golfed before his marriage to Barbara.) He also worked various jobs in Bismarck before they moved to Mandan in 2016 where they built a twin home together. He and Barbara loved volunteering at Medora. They also enjoyed building the cabin on Douglas Bay where they spent many weekends. The cabin gave ‘Mr. Fixit’ plenty to do in his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara daughter, Lisa and son-in-law Rich of Oklahoma City, OK; grandchildren, Gail and Jason Muller of Gillette, WY, Spencer Smith of Oklahoma City, OK, Morgan and Taylor Barnett of Shawnee, OK; and great grandchildren, Lane and Kyia Muller of Gillette, WY, Charlie and Grady Barnett of Shawnee, OK. Step children, Debra (Barry) Rasmuson, Karen (Jeff) Skjold; Steven (Dawn) Ziegler; and step grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brothers, DeVern (Margaret), Darwin (Shirley), Cleon (Shirley), Roger (Diane), Clinton (Angela). Vernon (Renae); sisters, Ramona (Bob) Pederson and Fay (David) Falk; and brother-in-aw, Lyle Klose; sister-in-law, Barbara (Roger) Nims; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eileen; son, Ronald; brother, Odis; and sister, Eloise; nieces, Laura Fossum and Hailey Hoggarth.
