Sally Fosse-Morikawa, 97, Jamestown, ND, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at Hi-Acre Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Sally Mae Burton was born April 14, 1909 at Crystal Springs, ND, the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Todd) Burton. Following graduation from local elementary schools and Madison Central High School (Madison, WI), she attended Jamestown College, receiving teaching credentials in 1927. During the great depression the family moved to Dawson, ND and Sally taught school in Montana. Returning to North Dakota in 1938, she joined the staff of the North Dakota State Capital, and later was employed by Fargo Glass and Paint in the sales and promotion department. In 1942, Sally married Ivan Fosse of Mayville, ND and for the duration of World War II traveled extensively as an Army wife. After the war, the couple settled in Mason City, Iowa, where Ivan taught in the high school and Sally became a pioneer in the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society was just beginning to organize units in all states. As the Iowa Director of Public Information, Sally had a major role in development of materials for newspapers, radio, classroom study, meetings, and a new medium, with promising potential, television. She was appointed to several national committees and participated in seminars and training courses at the national level. The Fosses were also prominent in Mason City Little Theater and other community organizations. After 12 years, they moved to Fresno, CA, where Ivan joined the staff of the Fresno School District. He died in 1977. Sally served for several years as Director of Information for the United Way, then known as United Givers Plan. She later became an executive of the Fresno American Cancer Society and ultimately established an independent public relations business. During the 1960's and 1970's, she was included in Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the West. In recognition of her many volunteer activities, in 1980 she received the Fresno Ad Federation's highest award for community service, the J.U. Berry Award. She was also named Lifetime Honorary Member of the Fresno Cancer Society Board of Directors. She served two terms on the Fresno County Board of Review and was community consultant for several organizations and institutions including Junior League, Fresno Community Council, West Coast Bible College, Autistic Children, Cancer League and numerous health groups and animal protection societies. In 1981, Sally married Manabu "Mori" Morikawa and they moved to Hilo. Hawaii. The couple moved to Jamestown, ND in 1997. Mori died in 2000.
Survivors include 3 step-daughters: Eva Maria (Windell) Vickers, Atlanta, GA; Rose Marie Kent, Colchester, Connecticut; Christine (Larry) Fox, Clarksville, Tennessee; 2 stepsons, Eduart Morikawa, Volcano, Hawaii; Anthony Morikawa, Hilo, Hawaii; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 nephews: Frank Schneckloft, Helena, MT; Todd Schneckloft, Seattle, WA; 2 nieces: Rita Cross, Helena, MT; Karen Brannan, Bismarck; and lifetime family friend, Eugene Hall.
Memorial Service - 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at the Hi-Acre Manor Chapel, Jamestown, ND with Reverend David Fisher officiating.
