Shirley M. Schultz, 82, Jamestown, ND, formerly of Woodworth, ND, died of Pancreatic Cancer on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Eventide at Hi-Acres, Jamestown, under Hospice Palliative Care.
Shirley Marie Elhard was born February 22, 1929, in Jamestown, the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Retzer) Elhard. She was baptized August 18, 1929 and confirmed January 31, 1965. She received her education at Gackle, ND and Edgeley High School, Edgeley, ND.
Shirley married Everett Koenig of Chaseley, ND in 1947. They farmed at Bowdon, ND. They later divorced. On March 15, 1963 she married Otto P. Schultz of Woodworth. They lived in Woodworth, where they owned Schultz Standard. In 1965, she became owner and manager of the Woodworth Café, and later served as Mayor of Woodworth, from 1986 to 1988. She was a homemaker and held various jobs as store clerk, cook, waitress, flag person, school bus driver and a nursery assistant during her lifetime. In 1989, they moved to Jamestown where they purchased a home and resided. She later became Otto's caretaker until her diagnosed illness in May 2011. She moved to Eventide at Hi-Acres on August 8, 2011.
Shirley was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, LWML Dorcas Circle, Quilting Ladies and Bible study group. She taught Bible school and Sunday school in Bowdon and Woodworth. She was past President of the Woodworth American Legion Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Jamestown Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a card group member.
She enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, singing, dancing, decorating cakes, art and oil painting. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, making quilts for Veterans and purchasing toys for the less fortunate at Christmas time.
Shirley is survived by her lifelong companion of 48 years, Otto, Grand Forks, ND; two daughters, Diana (Gerald) Carlson, Spiritwood, ND and Paula Schultz Petersen, Wahpeton, ND; son, Bruce Schultz, Shepherd, MT; a stepson, Donald (Wendy) Schultz, Grand Forks; a stepdaughter, Donna Schultz (Bob Ricketts), Grand Junction, CO; one sister, Phyllis Bethke, Kulm, ND; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Koenig; a stepson, Robin Schultz; a grandson, Michael Gerald Carlson; her parents; stepfather, Jake Wolf; two brothers, Kenneth, in infancy, and Lloyd; and a brother-in-law, Lyle Bethke.
