Sophie Wittmer

Sophie Wittmer, 87, Antioch, Tennessee, died Monday, December 30, 2002 at The McKendree Village Nursing Home, Hermitage, Tennessee.

Sophie Hofmann born January 9, 1915 at Medina, N.D., daughter of Albert and Katherine (Moser) Hofmann. She grew up and attended Medina rural school, where she received her elementary education.

She married Albert Wittmer on February 10, 1934 at Medina and they farmed in the Medina area until 1962 when Mr. Wittmer retired, and they moved to Jamestown, N.D. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church at Jamestown, N.D.

She worked for the Wagon Wheel Cafe, Red Owl Store, managed the Colonial Inn Restaurant for a short time and then was employed by the Woolworth Company where she managed the lunch counter from 1966 until her retirement in 1977, all in Jamestown, N.D.

She moved to Fargo, N.D. in September of 1996 to live with her daughter, Darlene and family. In September 1997 they moved to Antioch, TN to make their home. Due to failing health in January of 2002, she moved into the McKendree Village Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home in Hermitage, TN.

Sophie is survived by a daughter, Darlene Trautman-Hochhalter, Antioch, TN; four grandchildren, Kevin Babcock, Ypsilanti, N.D.; Kim Gearhart, Independence, MO; Neal Trautman, Lawrence, KS; Lisa Trautman, Antioch, TN; five great grandchildren; a great great grandson; one brother, Edward Hofmann, Jamestown, N.D.; one sister, Martha Krause, Paynesville, MN; a half-sister, Adeline Drew, Mesa, AZ; half-brother, Walter Hochhalter, Butte, MT; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, husband, a daughter (Arlys Jean Babcock), two half sisters, and three stepbrothers.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. - Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Eddy Funeral Chapel - Jamestown, N.D. with Rev. Norman Winkelman officiating.

Visitation: Friday, January 3, 2003 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at Eddy Funeral Home - Jamestown, N.D.

Burial: Highland Home Cemetery - Jamestown, N.D.
