Sylvia Backus, 92, Jamestown, North Dakota died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown. Sylvia was born September 10, 1911 in Sugarbush, Wisconsin the daughter of Alvirous and Emma Jean (Daskam) Walker. She grew up on the family dairy farm and attended school in Sugarbush, WI. Sylvia married Frederick (Fritz) Backus on June 12, 1929 in Waukegan, IL. They came to Jamestown in 1931 and operated the Brass Rail until 1975. Fritz died February 28, 1978.
Sylvia was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jamestown. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid baseball fan.
Sylvia is survived by a daughter-in-law, Linda Backus (Lyle) Leichtnam, Suprise, AZ, two grandchildren, Timothy (Martina) Backus, Peoria, AZ and Kimberly (Troy) Owen, Carnation, WA and three great-grandchildren; Amber, Ashley and Abby, one brother Chancy (Glendora) Walker, Manawa, WI and one sister-in-law, Norma Walker of Clintonville, WI.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz; a son, Richard; two brothers, Raymond and Silas Walker; and three sisters, Ila Brackob, Veva Hoffman, and Ethel Richard.
Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown with Rev. JoAnne Moeller officiating.
Visitation: 1:00 to 9:00 PM, Sunday, February 8, 2004 at Eddy Funeral Home.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, North Dakota.
