Theo Gunsch, 84, Jamestown, ND, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at Hi-Acre Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Theobald Gunsch was born April 25, 1922 at Gackle, ND, the son of Fredrich and Christina (Frey) Gunsch. As a child, he moved with his family to Medina, ND where he was raised and attended school. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's) in Sydney, MT for a year before entering the United States Army on December 8, 1942. Theo served as a medic during World War II in Central Europe, Northern France, Rhineland and participated in the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Buldge. He received a Good Conduct Medal, a Purple Heart, Overseas Stripes, European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbons and 5 Bronze Stars.
Following his discharge on October 10, 1945, he returned to North Dakota and worked with Christ Dewald in Dawson. On May 30, 1948 he married Lillian Gladys Wick at Bethany Lutheran Church in Robinson, ND. In 1955, they moved to Jamestown, ND where he worked for Nash-Finch and later for the United States Postal Service. He retired from the Post Office after 25 years, and worked for Lisko Funeral Chapel for 10 years.
Theo was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Eagles, the Elks, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of the Battle of the Buldge.
Theo enjoyed gardening and woodworking and often sold his handcrafted pieces at Craft Shows.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian, Jamestown, ND; 2 daughters: Susan (Rod) Richter, Minot, ND; Vicki (Richard) Livesay, Bismarck, ND; a son, Michael (Vickie) Gunsch, Bismarck, ND; 3 grandsons: Travis and Kevin Livesay and Sam Richter; 4 granddaughters: Jenna Filz, Heidi Richter, Jessica Livesay and Christina Gunsch; 2 sisters: Odella Mathias, Jamestown, ND; Helen Hillius, Jamestown, ND; a brother-in-law, Lester (Minnie) Wick, Robinson, ND; and 5 sisters-in-law: Ruth Wick, Fargo, ND; Mary Wick, Robinson, ND; Luella Wick Semmens, Woodowrth, ND; Junes Englerth, Park River, ND; and Emilia Gunsch, Turlock, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Charlene Rae; 4 brothers: August, Andy, Henry, Louie; and 7 sisters: Maggie, Lydia, Caroline, Eva, Emma, Mary and Martha.
