Velma McGruder went to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 19, 2008, leaving her family with an emptiness that can never be filled.
Velma was born the youngest of eleven children to Peter and Carolina (Roth) Beck on December 30, 1925 on the family farm north of Medina. She grew up and received her elementary education at the local rural school and helped on the family farm until she moved to Jamestown with her parents during her high school years. She married Donald McGruder on May 28, 1954, in Jamestown where they have been residents their entire married life. She worked at Keith?s Fashions in Jamestown for 38 years before retiring. Velma attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Jamestown and was a life long member of the faith.
Velma was a great cook and avid gardener, and loved her family intensely. Her greatest joy in life was feeding a house full of hungry family and friends. She will be greatly missed and sweetly remembered by her family as a warm and fun loving person.
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald, Jamestown; son, Rodney (Trish) of Olathe, KS; son, Richard (Shirley) of Jamestown, ND; three grandsons, Matt, Ryan and Weston; a brother, Edwin (Jackie) Beck of College Place, Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
