Vera Lee Barron died on Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Hi-Acres Manor, at age 98.
Vera was born on May 3, 1909, in Kansas City Missouri, to Myrle Lewis and Charles Hubbard. Because her mother died in childbirth and her father was unable to care for her, Vera was raised by various relatives and family friends from Utah, to Montana, to Missouri. She was married twice, becoming a widow at an early age. She had no children.
Vera was a hairdresser for several years in Chicago. It was there that she enrolled as a member of the Bahá'í Faith, and it was her faith that brought her to Jamestown in 1966 as a "home-front pioneer", to help establish a Bahá'í group in the area. She was trained as a CMA and worked at the State Hospital for over 20 years. After her retirement Vera did volunteer work at the Humane Society and a nursing home.
Vera was happiest when she was participating in her many Bahá'í activities. She made a pilgrimage to the Bahá'í World Center on Mt. Carmel in Haifa, Israel, and attended conferences in St. Louis, Missouri, Montreal, Canada, Merida, Mexico, and the Carribean. She joined 30,000 of her co-religionists in New York City in 1992 for the second Bahá'í World Congress. Her services to her Faith included membership on the elected Spiritual Assembly of Jamestown, and often held the office of Treasurer for that institution. She was a National Treasurer's Representative for North Dakota, educating many on the spiritual principles of Bahá'í funds. Her manner in performing this service was so sincere and dignified that those who heard her were inevitably deeply impressed and inspired. Vera was also a charter member of the North Dakota Regional Bahá'í Schools Committee, which established an annual school attended by hundreds of people from throughout the Midwest and Canada.
Vera has no surviving family, but will be missed by many friends and what she referred to as her "spiritual" children, brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3rd - the day of Vera's 99th birthday - at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND.
