Verna Coulston

Verna Coulston, 99, Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Jamestown, ND, died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Valley Square 4000 Nursing Center, Grand Forks, ND.
Verna Anna Schwartz was born February 23, 1908 on a farm near Oldham, SD, the daughter of Otto Earnest and Anna Marie (Hemmelgarn) Schwartz. She was raised in Oldham, SD where she lived with family friends, the Gustafsons, and later with an uncle and his family, the Hemmelgarns. She attended a country school northeast of Oldham. In 1921, she moved to Jamestown, ND, where she lived with her father and step-mother, Otto and Frances (Benusa) Schwartz and completed her education in the Jamestown Schools, graduating from Jamestown High School. In August of 1926, she married Archie Glenn Coulston at First Baptist Church of Jamestown. They settled in Jamestown where they owned and operated Coulston's Grocery Store. Archie died in June of 1970. In 2001, she moved to Grand Forks, ND to live with her daughter, Carol.
Verna was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, ND, the United Methodist Women, the BPOE Does, where she served as secretary for 5 years, the Elks Auxiliary, the Eagles Auxiliary and was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include 2 children: Glenn Archie Coulston, Grand Forks, ND; Carol Ann Kelley, Grand Forks, ND; 2 granddaughters: Andrea Sanford, Sioux Falls, SD and Phoenix, AZ; Alicia Kelley, Grand Forks, ND; a great-grandson, William Sanford, Sioux Falls, SD and Phoeniz, AZ; sister, Jane Pederson, Antioch, IL; and brother, William (Jean) Schwartz, Sheridan, WY.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother; husband; grandson, Scott and brother, Ray.
Funeral - 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND.
Visitation - 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND and 1 hour prior to services on Friday.
Interment - Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, ND
