Vernon Sam Harr

September 2, 1932 — May 27, 2015

Vernon Sam Harr was born in Woodworth, ND, September 2, 1932. He passed peacefully from this world on May 27, 2015 in Jamestown, ND after a busy day touring the farm and visiting family and friends. He had a long struggle with health issues; however, his last day with us was spent doing some of his very favorite things!
Vernon grew up on a farm near Buchanan, ND where he attended elementary and high school and on May 11, 1953, married Cleo Haynes. He is survived by his loving wife, Cleo and his children - Teree (Jerry) Rittenbach; Peg (Bob) Tinker, Pam (Jim) Wenzel, and Curt (Melinda) Harr. His grandchildren Jeremy, Joshua, and Christopher Rittenbach; Jason Tinker; Abby and Brian Wenzel; Lauren and Sam Harr and 9 great grandchildren are all part of his legacy. He is also survived by his sisters: Lil (Dick) Dixon; Viv Comeau; Mary Morford (Al - deceased) and numerous nieces and nephews. Vernon was preceded in death by his Parents Bertha and Sam Harr, Brother- James Harr (wife - Patty) and Grandson - Chad Tinker.
Vernon grew up on the farm and at a very young age, he began to take over the farm chores after his dad, Sam's accident. That did not put a damper on his spirit however. His sisters still remember him singing at the top of his lungs in the shower, washing the dirt from farm chores away! What in the world drove that kind of zest and energy for life? We like to think he held an uncommon connection to God, Family and friends. That connection wove together the fabric of his personality that made him our husband, dad, grandpa and brother.
Up at dawn, headed to the field, coming home well after dark. Playing baseball in the park with family, a Friday evening game of football in the yard or Saturday night Rook game with friends. Studying and adding his own personal thoughts to each Sabbath lesson he taught. He was a family man, a playful guy, a life-long learner and someone who much preferred to build up rather than tear down....and build he did...from a few acres, to a large family farm, a small family to a ‘clan', the Hillcrest Church School, the farmhouse, their retirement home and his last endeavor, the SDA Fellowship Room, now enjoyed by so many.
Those memories speak to his actions which simply were demonstrations of the man he was. Someone, who forever, has guided, provided positive influence and above all has lived his life with integrity. Matthew 5:16 says, "Let God's light shine through you by living your life so that others see His grace and love and in you." That was the man we knew. We, his family and friends have been so blessed to have him in our lives and we anxiously await the day when Jesus comes and we will be reunited with this special man who has touched our lives and shown God's love through his unending commitment to faith, and family.
